Touch and go

One of my favourite sites is metservice.com, a one stop shop about NZ weather information. They have a "VideoRoom section for videos of interesting and/or unusual weather conditions. Not surprisingly a lot of them are about Wellington.

This one is my absolute favourite! 😉 …

Pretty awesome, eh? Luckily only the best pilots fly plane to Wellington 😎

  1. Finally I can make this one public. And yes, I've changed the date again. Sorry about that, SC. :)Will be arriving home in about 24 hours from now.

  2. The good thing is you don't see how much the plane you are on sway while you are strapped inside. 😆 I don't expect a rough ride this time. Forecast tomorrow is not bad for Wellington. Usually the landing at Auckland is much bumpier than at Wellington. Like I said, only the best pilots fly to Wellington :cool:Better go. Be back soon. 😉

  3. My first comment is made three days from now. I am living in the future with fascinating stuff. That may explain why I eliminated you guys (earthlings) from my friends list earlier and have only just added you back. Perspective changes. Welcome back to compost land.

Well, it seems you should never take aviation safety granted. My flight to Wellington was calm almost all the way. In a northerly condition, about 5 minutes to the airport, normally the landing plane goes off Wellington south coast and makes a sharp left turn quite low above the sea to head north against the strong nor'wester. Yesterday, when the plane almost completed the turn, it suddenly shook and lost some altitude, then swayed rather uncomfortably to right and left, before gaining back some altitude and resumed decent. I'd landed at Wellington Airport perhaps 25 times before and that was the first time I heard gasps and small screams all around in the cabin. In the end the actual landing was an ordinary non-event. But for one tenth of a second, I thought, maybe this is it! 😥 Originally posted by solid copper:

Was our flight saved by the TARDIS, with you inside, flying near Wellington? 😉

  5. The flight to Wellington with a smaller aeroplane seems to be very exciting. I'd only been in Auckland some time ago and not with a small machine, but with a big machine from "Air New Zealand". For me it was exciting to be in New Zealand 😀 .

  6. It was a holiday trip and my husband and me only had been on the North Island for two and a half week. There we drove by car from from Auckland to Napier and back. We enjoyed it very much.

  7. Usually landing to Wellington in smaller 737 is a lot smoother than landing to Auckland in larger 747 or 777, even in a little windy condition. My scary experience Saturday happened not at landing but the hard turning at low altitude before actual landing. Originally posted by 7Wellis:

🙂 Cannot agree more. What was your trip for and how long did you stay?

  8. That would be a very nice trip. 🙂 Which route did you take? The inland routes to Napier, either via Taihape or Rotorua, go through extensive pine plantations as well as native forest stands. I also had a chance to go around the coast from Napier, via Gisborne and East Cape, to the Bay of Plenty (Rotorua), then on to Auckland. It was a lot longer way but we could see some great NZ rural landscapes and people.

Our route was nearly the same as yours. We only started in Auckland. We loved the Bay of Plenty and hope that we'll have the chance to visit it once.

  10. I liked those little coastal settlements between north of Gisbourne and the East Cape. Locals were in no hurry and drove on the open road (100km/h speed limit) at 50km/h. People also rode horses. And those little Maori churches! They were so cute as well as beautiful. We stayed near Tolaga Bay and had a day trip over to East Cape. That place is the proverbial idyllic NZ rural village, everyone wore gunboots except for the kids running around barefoot in winter!

  11. I intend to get to Gisborne this year, it is supposed to be very nice. The South Island is well worth a visit and the very far North too

  12. There are natural mineral hot pools at Morere Springs Scenic Reserve.

  13. There are lots of them about, we are fairly close to the hot rock here 😆

  14. Yes. Kiwis got tough skin on their feet. I can emulate their shorts in winter tramping attitude, but not the barefoot on rough ground staunchness. I'm still too soft.

  16. Twenty five British winters riding to work on a motorcycle have left their mark 😀

  17. Yes. Young, silly and easily pleased (like my cat) is a lot better than old and grumpy 😀

  22. No it' Hamburg in the North of Germany, it's not far from North Sea and windy. Once i was in such a situation in Edinburgh, and another time in a storm in Papeete. But I haven't take the plance since 10 years now. Plane must be a common mean of transportation for you ?

Now I've got 70 Air New Zealand airpoint dollars that expires in a couple of weeks. Maybe I should take an intrepid journey? Hmmm. Considering the shuttle to and from the airport will already cost $50+, there's not a lot of economical advantage, but, …
