A resolution

I would like you all to meet, Mimi, my dearest and most faithful companion.

She was nervous, timid and wise cat, unlike my current companion Arwen aka the Silly Little Monkey. But she was equally good or even better a huntress that Arwen, and most tender loving cat when she was relaxed and happy.

Sadly, after a brief illness, she passed away in June 2008. It was in early hours of morning. I spent the rest of the night by her side in a vigil by candle light. Next morning, in a brilliantly crisp early winter morning sun, I dug a hole in the part of garden where she used to sunbathe and buried her.

This is one of the best photos I took that captured her character. A few month after her passing, while visiting my parents in Japan, I used my dad's printer to print this A4 size photograph. Then when I got back home, I mounted it on to an extra thick cardboard and made the frame myself covered with this Kowhaiwhai patterned paper. This has been on my bed room wall ever since.

Lately the fearsome Wellington wind broke a fense panel behind her grave. When I tried to clean up the mess and fix the fense yesterday, I had to tiptoe around not to stand directly on top of her! Maybe that was why I felt like taking picture of this photograph this morning.

I've been Mimi's Mum since 1998, when I brought her home from SPCA shelter. I'm still Mimi's Mum and I like to share Mimi's memory with my online friends on the New Year's Day, as a part of my resolution to cherish and keep the special relationship I've found in my life, with many special people, humans or non-humans, physical or virtual.

Happy New Year.

  1. Allow you to be sad a few minutes, then think you had the chance to have a fidel, true, confident companion. Then think that life is life and you will find new expectations; different ones but still exhilarating that will fill your life. Think about happy moments only (well it's not always easy, but … just try ) …. and now ladies and gentlemen ….:left: …. :right: … hello anyone … ? Happy new year , if you weren't aware of it !!( Thanks for sharing those important moments of your life)

  2. I agree with my previous speaker on all counts and would basically repeat everything. I can only say, rejoice that you could share the time with this lovely cat. Finally I know why you call up here Mimi's Mum. Thank you for the emotional statement. I wish you a very nice and interesting year. :wizard:

  3. Thank you very much for your kind words, Olivier and Anglelika. The good people at S&T have called me Mimi, and, although I didn't mind being called that initially, I thought I should set the record straight. So I uploaded another picture of this photo frame with a few lines of explanation. That original version was a lot shorter and factual than emotional. But when I was composing this blog version with more details, as I described why I was remembering her more lately, a few dark fragments of the memories sneaked in and reset the tone to somewhat sad one. But really what the photograph brings to me is the good memories I shared with Mimi and that she still lives inside my memory laughing at Arwen's silly antiques. πŸ˜‰ And I had a very good New Year's Day. Did more preparatory work on fense fixing (reinforcing of the trellis panel) inside the lounge, which drove Arwen mad and her annoyed face was priceless! (Mimi'd be laughing!). Visited friends' place for dinner and had great poke roast and apple crumble :chef:. And, when I got home at 10pm, there was a feral rabbit in my garden sitting on top of Mimi's grave eating my herbs!! (That was so outrageous and hilarious at the same time. I've got the bloody bunny in my garden! πŸ˜† πŸ˜†) Yes, that WAS a very good day. ;)Thank you for the thumbs up, Aadil. Long live Mimi!

  4. sorry to hear of your beloved cat and to understand the relevance of your web address πŸ™‚ thank you for sharing.

Turned out the rabbit was neighbour's pet that wandered off. I caught her earlier and now she's reunited with her mum & dad. Her husband is still on loose, though :sherlock:

  7. My dear Mm, I know only too well the heartache that goes with losing a "child" Our pets become like our children, it is always sad to lose them.
We must remember the joy they brought us, the unconditional love and loyalty.

Thank you, Helen, for your kind words. Mimi's passing two and a half years ago had a profound impact on me (most notably I quit tramping). I think the fact that I'm now prepared to share this story with the world indicates I have finally moved on not from her memories but from the grief for her loss, to the appreciation and celebration of her memories' special place in my heart.

  10. Happy new year MM πŸ™‚ What a wonderful story, and now I understand your account and user name. I also became interested to know where Mimi got her name. Origin of name Arwen is very likely familiar to everyone, but Mimi I have not heard too often. Any of these perhaps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimi

July 1998 NZ OPERA's Winter Season production was La bohΓ¨me, and I saw it at the Wellington Opera HouseA week later a cat from the SPCA shelter arrived at my place. She was originally called, drum roll ladies and gentleman … BrΓΌnnhilde :star: after the valkyrie in Wagner's Ring Cycle. :sing: However the name BrΓΌnnhilde was so out of her nervous and timid character, it was changed three weeks later to Mimi after the heroin of La bohΓ¨me (more precisely MimΓ¬). πŸ˜† My cats get their names after fictional characters. The cat I had before Mimi, back in Japan, was named Ophelia. πŸ™‚ Sadly both Mimi and Ophelia (either dies a tragic death) had some quite serious health issues towards end of their lives. So I decided the new cat had to be named after more a resilient character, like a elf that never dies of old age πŸ˜‰

  21. Thanks Crysta. Our animal companions have a special place in our heart, don't they? Long live their memories. I'm hoping sharing her story here also means you and other friends that read her story will remember. And you all keep a piece of her. I like that idea. πŸ™‚
