Another spontaneous sharing inspired by the information I've found on Twitter
Accoding to New Zealand History Online, on the 3rd of January 1840, the British surveyors arrived on The Cuba in the Port Nicholson (aka Poneke), ahead of the ship full of setllers due arrival soon. The intial plan was to build the new settlement, which was supposed to be called "Wellington", in Pito-one (current Petone) based on the proposed plan drawn up by by Samuel Cobham for The New Zealand Company.
The surveyors found it impossible to follow the plan on the proposed site. According to Today in History: 3 January on NZ History Online
As a result an impossible timeframe was set for the Company surveyors. When the first settler ship arrived a few weeks after the Cuba on 22 January, there was no sign of the carefully laid out plan.
The Wellington Anniversary Day is marked on the Monday following the 22nd of January. The visitors arriving at Wellington are likely to head for the city via Cobham Drive along the scenic Evans Bay. The Poneke Rugby Club has produced many a notable All Blacks. Sadly the iconic Cuba Street Carnival, held bienially in Cuba Street in Central Wellington until 2009, has been canceld for this year.:(
I am wishing you a Happy Wellington Anniversary Day now because I am unlikely to remember to do so on the first Monday following the 22nd of January. :left: :D:hat: :drunk: :wizard: :hat:
Thanks, Deb. Nothing wrong with celebrating the anniversary a little earlier. 😀 :hat: :drunk:
"The best laid plans of mice and men…" :p.
😆 Naturally the initially proposed site was not where current Wellington is … 😉

Oops. I missed your first comment, Angelika. Yes, All Blacks have always boasted very powerful Maori players. That's the part of the package. 😉 Originally posted by 7Wellis:
I'm glad you like this post. I thought it could be a bit like a boring history lesson. :pOriginally posted by 7Wellis:
When are you coming? 😀
Thank you very much. It is very interesting.
Just added a thumbnail image of The Cuba with the permission by New Zealand History Online (via their Twitter account), linked to the official page for the painting. 😉
I wish you much fun. This post brought me Wanderlust (Fernweh in German) when I clicked on the link of the "All Blacks". They look like the Maori we had seen when we had been in NZ. They have so much power. 😀
Cool thanks, I bookmarked the All Black link. Well it would seem as if we are in for another party.
