Wellington is abuzz this weekend.
It started with the huge annual costume party also known as Wellington Sevens, a round of World Sevens Rugby Series.
This is the time when you would drive pass a bus stop and see a group of Roman centurions having an impromptu party, and would not bat an eyelid.
Check out this local newspaper page to see what good times the rebellers had.

I'm a rugby chick but not a party animal. Still I love watching Wellington Sevens coverage on TV, broadcast live on a free to air local TV channel. To my delight, and delight of all kiwi fans watching live or on screen, the All Black Sevens beat Australia 17 to 0 in the semi-final, then beat the then leader England 29 to 14 in the final to win the cup.
Apparently the party continued after rugby well into the small hours of morning
The celebration for the victory was supposed to be followed by the Waitangi Day celebrations down at the waterfront today. If the weather were better, I would go down there for some summer carnival atmosphere pictures. But that's not meant to be today. We'll see what next year brings. 😉

Added a video of the big costume party 😀 Originally found at The good, the bad and the rugby by Dominion Post

The post is a bit low key. I also thought about going down to get some pictures on Friday when the weather was OK, but had other pressing matters (such as repairing the roof :P). Besides I didn't have ticket and wouldn't be able to go inside the stadium. Ah, well. Maybe next year 😉
I would like to go sometime, I hear its a good party with a bit of rugby happening 😀

Oh, yes. I got lucky some years ago (a friend had spare ticket) and went right in there. It was brilliant! Apparently you need to be very quick. I heard the tickets for this one sold out by September.
I know little or nothing about what your talking about MM. Hope you enjoy yourself!
😆 It's OK, Crysta. Basically there was this big footy tournament this weekend in the town I live, where 75% of people would turn up in costumes to have a great party. :DJust follow this link to see how they dressed up 😉http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/4623086/Sevens-fans-buzzing-in-capitalGood night. Sweet dreams 🙂

I have no idea what this specifically means, MM, but it looks like something akin to Marti Grauis, which I have only seen pictures of, I have never attended. I am not sure what "Sevens" means or refers to? About all I know about Rugby is it has a "Pig Skin" involved and is the precursor to our Foot Ball, as opposed to Soccer. So therefore MM, your southern hemisphere culture has lost me, but thats OK, I wouldn't worry about it, I am not. Hope you enjoy it!
@Crysta. Thank you, I enjoyed watching them (the games AND the spectators costumes) very much. "Sevens" is a type of rugby played by seven-man teams and a match only last 14 minutes, and entire tournament is finished in two days. Actually the next one is coming your way, to Las Vegas So did you like the costumes? Some of them are pretty cool, eh? :D@Ange Glad you enjoyed. If you decide to come, you may as well try to get the tickets and book your flight for next years tournament. 😉
Hi, that is very informative and I would like to come, but unfortunately it is a little bit too far. Have fun!

Yes, the costumes get wild and bewildering every year. But basically it's just a huge costume carnival. :)Originally posted by crystalacey:
Apparently the Sevens will be included in the Olympic games soon. A commentator predicted then the USA would put serious money in developing their squad. I don't know if Canada will follow the US, but there many be s wider coverage of the game in your continent.

My problem, MM, is I have no context to view this cultural statement. From what I have seen, some looks like they should be in the Arctic, and then there is a woman with few cloths on. Therefore, instead of "cool" I am left with confusion as to what I am looking at. :confused:As far as Las Vegas goes, If it is not on National TV, that we get in Canada, I would have no why to see it, not that I am much it to Sports anyway. Rugby, doesn't have much Air or Cable play here in North America as far as I am aware. 🙂
" World Sevens Rugby Series" :eyes: … Dubai …. Hong Kong … not .. Wales, France, Ireland …. "World" …

Just because a sport is included in the Olympic Games doesn't make it nationally acceptable. Look at Soccer in North America, it has taken many Decades to get to where it is. Now it is more than a Foot Note but still a Side Bar!
I've just updated the post with a picture and a new link. Looks better now. 😎

Good one, Olivier! :lol:Sounds like a good time was had by all… except for the Australians… :right: and maybe the English…:D
I think everyone enjoyed themselves, even the non-NZ players (perhaps not their coaches, :p) because Wellington Sevens is really about the big costume party! :DSo which costume is your favourite, Deb? I bet it's the picture No31 😀
Just added a video of the costumed rebellers :coffee:
What picture no. 31?

On top the page is a flash based slide-show of photos of the costumed rebels. Clicking the picture will bring up the next one. There are 80 of them. 😉 The last 10 or so are player pics but the rest are all regular people in great costumes! It is possible your content blocker is blocking the slideshow. Mine, using the fanboy's block list did block it. Disabling the blocker for the newspaper side doesn't seem to bring up excess amount of ads. [Addemdum]What my block list was blocking was "*600×400.jpg"! (The fanboy can get a bit too heavy handed with blocking) If you don't see picture, just look for that in your block list and remove it. If you want to see what No31 picture is, it at http://static2.stuff.co.nz/1296795417/451/4619451_600x400.jpg But others are also worth looking through for good laughs 🙂

I have been using my husband's iPad which doesn't have flash, so it wasn't at all obvious to me. But now that you have given me a direct link, I enjoyed picture 31 very much. 😀
Congrats to your boys MM. That is my kind of rugby….17-0 is a annihilation…..wiping the floor, beating the c..p out of. The party would also be my kind of party.Once again….congrats.
Well, rugby is something that South Africa and New Zealand share in common! :p.
Thank you, Helen. Originally posted by NitroH:

Heyyyyy! Not only do y'all really know how to party, but y'all have very pretty women there, Mimi! SEE? I wasn't kidding when I said New Zealand had high standards. The crowd at that Wellington Sevens 2011 looks about like the crowd at one of my Mini Concerts, huh? Impromptu Parties? :hat:

That's from a free collage maker that I was trying out on Bob's iPad. 😀
When it comes to sports, I know nothing. There are parades where people people dress up in costumes. I have a photo of a large group of people from such a parade. Each is dressed as Castro wearing military fatigues and long beards. And they are line dancing. :left:

Do the people dress up in costumes when they go to the footy games in US? 😀

You mean the Laptop Formerly Known as an iPad?
Or … that YouTube crowd could also be the impromptu party that popped up out of thin air within ten minutes of you being announced MyOpera MOTW, Mimi.At first I was going to say Mimi MOTW Mardi Gras, but then I realized "Mardi Gras" is probably not known outside of the United States.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_GrasHmmm? Seems similar to Wellington Sevens.

You mean North American Continent folks? 😀

You see MM, your really no further ahead with us Northern Hemisphere folk. All we are seeing is parade and party!!
Mimi, my comment is in reference to the second paragraph in your Post calling the Wellington Sevens a huge annual costume party. And when I click on the Wellington Sevens link, it says "Rugby Carnival" there and has a Pic of a Big Crowd and a closeup of a girl obviously in costume, as others appear to also be. So, THAT was my connection. A BIG party atmosphere albeit not necessarily the same type of event. Both Mardi Gras-ish. I think-ish, I guess-ish.
I don't believe that Rugby is very well known at all in the Northern Hemisphere. There is a very slight interest in Japan, and a bit more interest in England. I think that is about it MM. OH Well.

MM, I have been teasing you. There is only one sport I give two hoots about on this planet and that is Japanese Sumo, and you would probably know in that part of the world, it is really on the ropes so to speak. However, having said that the most popular sports are difficult to miss on this planet. In Europe and Asia, The most popular I hear about are Soccer, Cricket, Curling, Golf, and Sumo. Where ever Rugby is under that, it is. I really could careless, except to tease you a bit about it. As far as Sumo is concerned, I don't want to talk about it. It is in devastated shape! 🙂
Cheers my friends. This post is not quite about rugby itself but how Wellingtonians know how to combine a big sport event with a big party and celebrate the occasion having a great grand time! So in that aspect, Chuck was quite right about his reference the Mardi Gras. 😉
Well MM, you can hardly recognize the people, they are all painted in SA colors and that goes for the hair as well.I went to the big World Cup party dressed in only the SA Flag.
