Wellington celebrates

Wellington is abuzz this weekend.

It started with the huge annual costume party also known as Wellington Sevens, a round of World Sevens Rugby Series.

This is the time when you would drive pass a bus stop and see a group of Roman centurions having an impromptu party, and would not bat an eyelid.

Check out this local newspaper page to see what good times the rebellers had.

I'm a rugby chick but not a party animal. Still I love watching Wellington Sevens coverage on TV, broadcast live on a free to air local TV channel. To my delight, and delight of all kiwi fans watching live or on screen, the All Black Sevens beat Australia 17 to 0 in the semi-final, then beat the then leader England 29 to 14 in the final to win the cup.

Apparently the party continued after rugby well into the small hours of morning

The celebration for the victory was supposed to be followed by the Waitangi Day celebrations down at the waterfront today. If the weather were better, I would go down there for some summer carnival atmosphere pictures. But that's not meant to be today. We'll see what next year brings. 😉

  1. Just popping in to see if the Cute Women were still here.Yep, they're still up there.

  2. Especially since I know of her many DIY projects. Maybe she got stuck in that arrow attic! :eyes:

  3. DIY projects? Like Time-traveling DeLoreans, Family Nuclear Reactors and such? An Arrow Attic? :eyes: What the blazes is that?

  4. A narrow attic that is so narrow that you cannot fit the 'n' in it…

  5. :sst: You shouldn't have let on, I found a perfectly reasonable excuse…

  6. Ohhhhh! A narrow attic.I thought maybe it was an attic full of arrows whereby Ninja skills were required to maneuver in it lest you get poked, sliced and diced.

  7. Dang! I'm typing on Bob's iPad using the virtual keyboard. It's tricky. :nervous:

  8. 😀 Well ninjas are supposed to be able to fight in the dark… :ninja:

  9. You mean this one?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Mq5jmoXIzw"When you’re alone, Silence is all you see, When you’re alone, Silence is all you’ll be.Give me your heart to come to me."When you are here, music is all around. When you are near, music is all around.Open your eyes; don’t make a sound."Let in the shadow! Let in the shadow!Let in the light of your bright shadow!"

  10. Thanks for popping in, guys. Originally posted by debplatt:

Luckily I've just been busy wirebrushing the roof and being baked red at the same time, doing some translation (paying job, mind you), trying to fix the brusch cutter, taking it to the shop, going hardware shopping, giving the cat flea treatment, worm tablet and care for the wound she had in a big fight with a god-knows-what at 0450 in the morning, been grocery shopping and a few other things. At least it finally feels like summer. ;)Originally posted by darkesthour:

    Its TOO quiet

OH, and I've been trying to find out the lyrics of the song Katherine Jenkins sang in Doctor Who Christmas special. 'When you're alone, silence is all you know … ' That one. Have you seen it? It's a great song, and it's been going around in my head ever since I saw the show a few weeks ago.

  11. Because you guys keep saying how much you are enjoying Dr. Who, Bob and I have been watching it on Netflix ( :left:does that mean anything over there?). We are up to the year 2006. 😀

  12. Yap, that one. Isn't it addictive? :DThe one you linked is taken from the show and some words are difficult to make out. And the lyrics found on the Net are not all consistent depending on the source. The CD's been released recently in early February and I'm hoping to find the "official" recording version.

  13. I must admit that i am no longer a fan, now Jon Pertwee, thats a different matter

 My favourite episode in 2005-6 is "The Empty Child"Three best episodes IMO are yet to come: "Blink" in 2007, "Silence in the Library" in 2008 and "Midnight" in 2009 also in 2008. Enjoy. ;)[Addendum]FYI "The Empty Child" won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form in 2006 and "Blink" won it in 2008. "Silence in the Library" was a 2009 runner up

I recently tried my luck with a spark plug but failed miserably. Auto-electronics is not really my department. :p

  16. I suppose I'm a new generation Doctor Who fan. 😉 Steven Moffat is SO COOL 😎 Originally posted by darkesthour:

He seems one of the the most popular incarnations from the 20th century series. I've never got to see the pre 21st century franchise. They didn't broadcast it in Japan. 🙁

  17. That is a good idea, it is possible to break the ceramic around the central electrode if you do not gap it in the right way… Then bits of nasty hard stuff falls into your engine :awww:

    the translation from home

I'm a self employed freelancer and work as a subcontractor for a Japanese translation agency. Naturally I work from home and never need to commute anywhere. The jobs come to me 😀

  19. Turned out the unit still wouldn't run at full. It idles fine, so figured it wasn't the spark plug. Took it to the shop and they'll clean something called "spark arrester" in the muffler to see if that's the cause of not being able to power up. Another beautiful day here in Welly but I'll be stuck indoors for more translation. 🙁 A deadline today. Hope to get it done quickly and spend more time on the roof. Since I started wirebrushing and also inspecting the paint condition more closely, I've found the paint in some area is not as sound as I hoped. So there's a lot of hard wirebrushing to do. :awww: At least my arms are developing some muscles without even paying for the gym 😀

  20. Are you doing the translation from home because of the car difficulties, or do you always telecommute?

  21. Wow, that's awesome! Still, the view is almost too good. Plus there is the lovely summertime breeze wafting in, rustling the curtains. Plus Arwen dragging in her latest hunting trophy. Could be too many distraction for someone like me.

She did that yesterday. A little mouse. 🙁 I had to finish it off, poor thing, and take it away from her to put in the bin (wrapped in 3 layers of plastic bags). I've just given her a worm tablet, and now she was trying to get more from the mouse. I couldn't let that happen. :pOriginally posted by debplatt:

That must have been hard for you. :worried:

  24. It was doomed anyway. Just couldn't watch Arwen playing with it. 🙁

  25. Finding an elegant way to administer the coup de grace is difficult…

  26. But that's the problem… cats like to draw the end out. It's apparently more "fun" that way.Recently I was watching a YouTube video of a hawk preying upon another bird. That went on forever, too. It was kind of hard to watch.

Yeah, I got that. Where I grew up in the country, there were quite a few incidents of deer being hit by cars near our home. If the deer was injured terribly, but not killed by the collision, my dad would use his revolver to end the suffering.

  28. Cats can be appalling at 'playing' with their food, I have seen a hawk chasing a bird to the point of exhaustion too, they do it so the prey cannot defend itself and so potentially damage the hunter…I think that MM was discussing taking the 'end' part out of the cats domain and actually doing it herself… :eyes:

  29. I like to tell myself that when animals are being preyed upon, they go into shock which reduces their suffering. :right: But I don't always believe what I tell myself.

  31. Maybe that will be MM's next choice of weapon? I understand that a Glock is not a bad choice 😆

  32. Well, sometimes the old ways are a bit clunky but very reliable 😀

Surely it's away overkill! The mouse yesterday was a tiny one, only slightly bigger than the ammunition, I should imatine. Aslo a Glock would probably break my puny wrist.:p Originally posted by debplatt:

Apparently the endorphins will be released in such an event to help the animal overcome the pain. I read it somewhere, either in Temple Grandin's book or Oliver Sacks' book about her.

Nah! a five year old can fire a Glock! It's made of plastic after all! :left:.But way overkill for a puny mouse! :awww:.

  35. Hey, some of the mice over here can be pretty big and tough :eyes: :insane:
