Bubo?

bubo 😀 …

Picture of Washi-Mimizuku or Eurasian Eagle Owl (Latin name Bubo bubo), in captivity at Kushiro City Zoo. Click on the image to go to the full picture and the rest at my Shoot&Tell album. 😉

Last month I was away on a trip to Japan to visit my parents and stayed there 3+ weeks. During my stay we made a trip to the East Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's four principle islands. This is the area famous for its abundant wildlife, including the UNESCO World Heritage area Shiretoko Peninsula. As I had purchased a new camera only a week prior to the trip, I went a total shutter-happy and took over 1000 photos. I have selected and uploaded the ten story telling pictures at my S&T album.

But ten pictures are not enough for such a big trip in such a photogenic area. I'm now in a process of photo selection for a new album at my site, hopefully be ready in a few days. So watch the space 😉

[Update]
I ended up making two albums for this trip:
End of Earth the Wilderness – Shiretoko, Hokkaido, Japan
&
Kamui's Forests and Waters – Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan

Enjoy :coffee:

  1. Thank you, DH. The owls made fantastic objects for my camera. I'll upload some more later in the yet-to-be-created Japan trip album :DI'm very happy with my new camera. I spent some time reading up reviews and comparing products. I was getting sick of the poor quality of jpg images my Canon compacts produced. So my priority was image quality, followed by affordability then versatility. I also considered the high-end compacts such as Canon G11 & G12, but with that pricing, getting a good quality entry level SLR can become a good alternative. E-620 is almost 2 years old model and the price was less than a half of the original RRP. And buying it in Japan made it even cheaper. (Mind you, officially it was a present from Dad. He let me use his name to order. And the money came from his pocket. ;))

  2. Neat owl, I have just been reading up on your new camera, looks like a very good choice

  3. From what I can see you have made a good choice, investments like that are always difficult decisions 🙂

 Yes. There has been a noticable improvement in picture quality. Also I'm noticing my composition is better because of the viewfinder. And more accurate control of where I'm pointing the lens to, because now I can use three points of contact to stabilise the camera, two hands and forehead. :DI spent a lot of money on my tramping equipment in the last two decades. And I had loads of great times with it. Now I'm hoping I'll have equally great times in photography. After all the price of this camera is a lot less than the prices of backpacks, sleeping bags, tent and cooking gear combined. ;)PSOh, and the tramping boots and rain parkas. They wear out a lot quicker than my liking :irked:

😆 I see. When that happens while tramping, especially pacing downhill for carpark/home, it tends to lead to human body becoming airborne and landing on a part of body which normally does not come direct contact with ground 😛

  6. There is a short period of time when the foot (or sometimes feet) is down whilst the thing is still moving towards a full standstill, leading to premature wear of the soles…

  7. I have similar problems with footwear, though its not so bad now I have stopped riding motorcycles..

  8. How come your footwear get damaged on motorbikes when you don't even put them down on the ground? Honest question.

  9. Diesel fuel spills on roads have a similar effect when riding motorcycles, the impact is probably more aggressive though :awww:

  10. Yes, I should imagine. 😥 I've never had ridden a motorbike but had a couple of spills from pushbike. One was especially nasty and I did a somersault over the handlebar. Luckily no broken bones. On the other hand, my only bone fracture was caused by carrying a heavy backpack down on slippery run of steps. Lesson, speed doesn't always cause more damage, but momentum does. 😥

  11. Exactly, drop any of the three from 20 meters and I suspect only the ant would survive 😀

  12. Really on minimal effort :DI am outta here, stuff to do. Have a good one

  13. And light weight so a high velocity fall won't cause serious damage
