Busy spring at vege gardening front

I have previously reported how busy I was during September & October, and, still managed to put some work into my vege patch. 🙂 The work load seems to have eased up in November. And I'm able to spend more time sorting, editing & uploading pictures. I spent last evening and this morning going through vege garden related photos. …

Following new bed making I reported in last month in the post, Breaking new ground, I drew up a planting plan on paper. It seemed I'd need a little more space for peas and carrots. So, like any good geeky beta testing translator, I decided to install an extension 😆

Then I dug over the spots I was planing to plant seedlings and incorporated more compost & base fertiliser according to the needs for particular veges. :sherlock: The spots are marked by defined mounds or raised rows. I enjoyed this stage of "charcoaling pictures on blanc canvas" I also sow carrot, pea, broccoli & beetroot seeds at their respective niche. 😀

Unfortunately an unidentified cat :left: discovered a way to climb into the raised bed and decided the carrot bed had a perfect consistency for its need. :yuck: I tried to address the issue, but, probably didn't do a good job. The bird netting did keep cats away from the bed, but, would have been better over the strawberry bed, where the bad birds were stealing my strawberries! 😥

Then I planted out some spring onions (bunching onion for our US friends?) Meanwhile my little tomato seedlings were not little any more :eyes: I moved them into my brand-new outside grow-house and so that they can harden up.

Then the day came for them to finally get planted out in ground. I know that support structure looks over the top. But believe me they'd need it, or even more elaborate one when they grow, against the 140kph+ Wellington nor'wester gales that regularly batters this side of Wellington hills. So far they survived 106kph. :yikes:

  1. Unfortunately not all are going according to the plan. The pepper & eggplant seedlings are not growing as fast as I'd hoped for. And eggplants are such wimps! They are supposed to be sun & heat loving, but they wilt if I leave them in the sun!We are having a late cold spell lately and a valley frost forecast for Wellington tomorrow morning. Not sure how tomatoes handle that. I'm a little worried 🙁

  2. Yes. I'm thinking about covering them loosely with weed mat. I think the eggplant seedlings have not developed their roots enough to support the top part. I might have used the wrong kind of potting mix with too much nitrogen to pot them on. I'll try babying them for another month in the hope that they'll toughen up by then. Fingers crossed.

  3. Cover everything for the night, if you can … even just a cloth cover. Sounds like the eggplants need more water, but I'm no expert on eggpants.

I see you have net to keep cat and birds away, but one can also use gauze to provide some protection against frost.

  5. Will report in the morning. It's still 8°C outside and the forecast has been changed to "chance morning frost". So I feel more relaxed about the situation.Off to bed, now. Thanks for stopping by & commenting, Sami. Have a good day. 🙂

  6. I've put black weed mat over tomatoes & then bird netting to hold it. I've also put a half bucket full of hot water beside them, hoping to keep the area warm. See how they go.

  7. I wish you all the best for your plants. By the way – have you identified the "unidentified cat"? I had to laugh, when I read this 😆

  8. Thank you, Angelika. They are holding up against the recent wind & cold wet spell. They'll need a bit more sun & warmth to start growing properly. But so far all seedlings I planted out have survived. :)Originally posted by 7Wellis:

😆 What else can I say? I haven't identified which cat it was or its name. So it's still an unidentified cat. :p

  9. Thanks, Crysta. You have a very nice afternoon & evening. 😀 :wine:

  10. That is so cute! I bet that cat never uses your flower bed for a toilet. :p

In no case it was YOUR cat, right? 😉

    You Too, I am!

  13. 😆 😆 Great! Thanks, Crysta :cheers:Here's my lot this morning. 😀

  14. I'm finally making use of the bird netting I bought last year.

  15. 😎 :beer:Still not quite summery yet. A bit cool in night. But we are getting there. 🙂

  16. Your gardening posts keep surprising me — I forget you are having summer.

  17. I kept wondering why you were doing so much off season, preparing for next season until I had the realization about the seasonal difference. Duh. …We just had our first little snow accompanied by some freezing temperatures. For all its good points, my VW Passat doesn't have the strongest rear window refroster.
