Two Bears are better than one

Recently two Bears had a chance encounter in my eLibrary borrowed items list. 😀

The Chief Scout Bear Grylls' first book, Facing Up was a good fun to read. It was a nice change to read a book on climbing Mt Everest in which no one encounters a tragic loss of life deserted in the death zone.

I also enjoyed his sometime rather tongue in cheek narrative. My favourite part was his description of how he first met his wife-to-be; after a night time skinny-dipping, finding her standing between the sea and his clothes; and how he had to "cover his wedding equipment" while apologising the state of his attire. :p

Greg Bear is the author of Blood Music, one of my all time fav sci-fi novels. He was probably the first scifi author to incorporate nanotechnology into his story, long before nanoprobes and the Borg made their first appearance. I borrowed two of his 1990s books, Queen of Angels and Slant (aka /). They share main characters, who try to solve dark med-psych-tech mysteries in a near future US society where nanotechnology is extensively used to shape citizens' minds and bodies.

Hundreds of sci-fi writers have written about space, androids and destructive weapons. But good bio-medical sci-fi are rather in a short supply. I can only name one more great bio-med sci-fi novel from top of my head, which, of course, is The Andromeda Strain by none other than Michael Crichton.

  1. Hi Eric. Hope I have stimulated your reading appetite a bit. 🙂 Originally posted by ersi:

are there real (bio-zoological) bears in New Zealand too?

Not in the wild. Only native mammal species in NZ is bats. I suppose the zoos keep them. One funny thing is NZ accent does not distinguish "bear" from "beer". Those words are pronounced the same. Some pronounce both words as "beer", while others pronounce "bear". So if you ask a kiwi verbally 'Do you have bears in NZ?' you may receive a reply which sounds like, 'Sure. We've got many bears in NZ.' when in fact what the guy means is "many beer (brands/brews/types)" 😀

  2. Fabulous recommendations :)Btw, are there real (bio-zoological) bears in New Zealand too?

  3. I installed few ebook apps for Android and will start with free (old) books at first. Then maybe I'm going to buy some in the future :)Originally posted by mimi_s_mum:
