The day after the storm

There's a Japanese saying "Taihu ikka no seiten" meaning 'The sky is bluest after a typhoon past.' After the hail storm the day before, I went out for a short walk to find the bluest sky on top of Tinakori Hill. …

I used an old less used track off the play ground by Pembrook Street. First the track was muddy and slimy through a small gully but soon it became drier. After crossing two current wider tracks, and climbing diagonally through the pines, I intercepted the current track from Glamorgan Street roadend. In about 25 minutes of leaving home, I popped up at southern end of Tinakori Hill and was greated with yet another beautiful views.

  • Suburbia, sea & hills
  • Wind turbines & snowy peaks above hill side suburbia
  • Our beautiful city
  • Raggedy peak

There were also some interesting utility structures on top. Climbing up on a concret structure behind the towers, presumeably housing some machinery for the water tanks. A great harbour view could be had.

  • With special decoration
  • Three towers, actually
  • White sails on blue sea
  • Pollens bite dust, no, mud!!!

Thanks to the power of hailsones, the annoying pine pollens have been delivered to their rightful position, on the ground.

The white tops of Tararua Southern Crossing greeted me in a distance. Beautiful but also could be a very dangerous and scary place to be.

I think you have them beat in the snow and ice category. 😀 Whenever a wintry blast descends on us, the local weathermen always refer to it as a "Cold, Canadian storm front." So our nasty winter weather is all your fault. :lol:Originally posted by darkesthour:

I'd love to be able to adjust my accent like that.

Me, too. I have no skills in that area. Well I sometimes try, but I am convinced that instead of actually adopting the accent, I just sound like I'm mocking people with that accent which is not my intent. Best not to. :zip:

They do, at least us in the North Island. the people down in the South, especially at fringe of the high countries, do have a lot more ice & snow extreme. But Wellington beats everyone else in windiness category. :)Originally posted by debplatt:

I saw an interview with a speech instructor specialised in coaching actors to adopt different accent for their role. Apparently some have more knack than others. This is something I've noticed for a while and thought about developing into a post some day: There are quite a few Brit/OZ/NZ actors in recent Hollywood movies and US network shows, acting as an American, but not many American actors in Brit/OZ/NZ shows acting non-American (though there are a few Canadians). Probably a supply/demand thing with such job markets, but is it possible there's something in the US culture, a slight aversion/embarrassment to different accent? One notable American actor playing a kiwi role superbly was Anthony Hopkins in "The World's Fastest Indian". He was very good, at least to my ears.

😆 As it turns out, we have quite a few distinct regional accents. According to this Wikipedia article on General American:

General American, like British Received Pronunciation (RP) and most standard language varieties of many other societies, has never been the accent of the entire nation. However, it has become widely spoken in many American films, TV series, national news, commercial ads, and American radio broadcast.

The General American accent is most closely related to a generalized Midwestern accent…

So if you've been watching our movies, shows, etc., you don't actually know how most of us sound. This is where this accent is from:Originally posted by mimi_s_mum:

Sir Anthony is a Welsh actor according to his bio on Wikipedia. 😀

You are probably right. Although I did notice difference in accents between Fringe (set in Boston), Trauma (set in San Francisco) and True Blood(set in Louisiana)

:eyes: Can I have some!? I love Lady Gaga! 😆 Probably "love" is a bit of an overstatement. But I do like her very much. That woman is a genius, as well as honest & hardworking, which is a rare commodity in that industry, IMO. 😉
