Who’s there!

As you've probably noticed, I live in a hillside suburb overlooking a big bush reserve. Naturally most houses in this area can have some privacy while still enjoying a good view. Our high window overlooking the street is one such private lookout.

There are still times, however, I feel presence, a fleeting shadow impossible to capture, a flash of movement, outside the high window. I quickly turn my head, 'Who's there!' …

It sometimes turns out a rather colourful character like this visitor.

  1. Thanks, Deb. I'm not exactly sure what this guy is. NZ has several native parakeets (collectively called "kakariki" by the Maori for the green colour) and I initially thought this could be one of them. But search found none with this kind of loud coloration. It turned out this one was not actually a parakeet, but Eastern rosella, native to eastern Australia.

  2. Now starts a long explanation about the relationship between kiwis and aussies… Or maybe not 😆

But with help ofthis page, I could complete the transcript. :DOriginally posted by debplatt:

I'm afraid the Aussie mockers won. At least I could understand it.

I suppose that's one of the points, Kiwi: complex & subtle vs Aussie: simplistic & loud?I'm not saying those are general national characters, but some of the notions the Kiwis have about themselves in relation to the big cousins across the ditch.

  4. Thanks for the transcript. 😀 I had no idea that the Kiwis and the Aussies had this rivarlry-thing going.

So you don't have any American vs Canadian thing?

    Awkward question…

  7. No discussion of Canada is complete without noting their sartorial contribution to law enforcement uniforms.

  8. I am wondering if Gary or SC is going to stop by… :left: :right: 😀

  9. So Canada is a country in which lumberjacks sing and horses take pictures? 😀

    Where is the horse? 😀

  11. What a treat! I saw this post earlier but on cellphone. I thought I might see the bird more clearly on a large screen and would comment then. Okay, I am a bit dazed right now and don't know what to say with regard to Canada. Will return later and see what I can contribute…

  12. Oh, on the top of my head (and this is urgent), that Royal Canadian Mounted Police is NOT standing on horse shit, or compost, however you want it!

I don't know. He is most likely facing front while the horse-do happens at back.

  14. He belongs to the mounted police unit which means his chances of horse shit sighting could be bigger than bear sighting.

  15. 💡 I bet Duddly Doo Right got his name because he had horse doo doo on his boots.

  16. I've a feeling compost handling may be assigned to a different department

  17. But that's besides the point. I meant he and his bosses would appreciate your expertise. Or would you rather save it for the benefit of southern France?

  18. When I first thought about studying abroad over 20 years ago, it was a choice between Canada & NZ. I chose NZ on three reasons: 1 Nuclear free policy; 2 Outdoors and 3 Rugby. I think that was the best choice I made in whole my life. 😉

  19. I'm a Tokyoite. Born and raised a city girl with love of outdoors. 😉

  20. I think the climate and weather probably suit you better. Which part of Japan did you grow up in? I had a pretty good friend from Kyoto but have lost touch now.

I would love to have another opportunity to visit Canada, even if it meant checking out a couple boot bottoms. :DI've only had had two vacations there, Once to Prince Edwards Island and Nova Scotia, and once to Alberta (Banff, Jasper, etc.). Both were wonderful. 🙂
