The sign was ominous.
…
The forecasters and media were in unison warning us of arrival of this "significant nationwide weather event", "polar blast direct from Antarctica" and "once in the lifetime snow" in late Sunday afternoon and be lasting for at least three days, which might disrupt transport and electricity supplies in wide areas. Although the general attitude was, 'It's a southerly storm. Usually happens in winter. What's the big deal?'
Still, just in case the snow was really that bad to affect power supplies, I decided to finish off the small translation order by end of Sunday, even it was not due until midday Monday. I also went shopping to stock up around midday Sunday in relatively calm weather. The shop assistant at the green grocers said he did not believe there'd have that much snow.
Still, just in case, I continued to work on the translation order.
And it arrived almost exactly at 1630!
Either I or my cat could not grasp the magnitude of this event at first.
I did manage to finish the translation order and sent away in the evening. When I checked the forecast again, it said there will now be four days of snow, instead of three!!
And the "once in the lifetime event", later affectionately termed #snowmageddon by NZ tweeters, had started.
To be continued …

😆 Apprehension and anticipation went side by side in the few days leading up to the "event" :pJust updated the post and edited the picture of Arwen confused in the face of snow, in case you missed it. 🙂
Nasty cold white stuff :yuck:
She was rather upset most of the times whe snow fell. I couldn't bring myself to push her outside in the cold :pOriginally posted by darkesthour:
Arwen never did that. More accurately she never wanted to stay out that long.
Yeah, thats what you call a lazy wind, it blows through you instead of around you 😀
😆 That is cute!I think the biggest put-off for Arwen was the cold southerly wind. She might've been happier if the snow had fallen as calmly as in that video.
Cats are funny in snow, I like watching them trying to catch it as it falls, best not laugh though or they get all huffy 😆
This is a classic example 😀http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8iSL93u-9Q
Or rubbish on the streets 😀
That why we don't have the winter air pollution problem in Wellington. 😀
Ouch! :p
It sounds like you were well prepared for the worst. And given that, wasn't it a bit fun?Especially enjoyed the photo of Arwen looking out the window. 🙂
Actually I was quite worried as the firewood supply was already running low. I did manage to eke it out by using electric heating at times. (Dreading the next power bill :insane:) But the power supply was also touch and go in Monday evening when the electric storm hit Wellington. But it was fun more or less. I have to say my cold tolerance was a lot less than a few years ago. Perhaps it has something to do with having been back from the semitropical Japan 6 weeks before, or maybe old age. :cry:I'm planning another post on this "event". The concept is already set. Watch the space. 🙂
It snowed on my birthday. 😛 A fun thought for me since it never snows around here on my birthday.
My cold tolerance is close to zilch, I do not like being cold anymore
Not old battle scarred ones :awww:
Yes, Snowmageddon day 1 was my birthday. Thanks. :hat:

Ah, that's special. :)Funny thing is it used to never snow on my birthday. But now the possibility is quite real. The snowmageddon missed my birthday only by a couple of weeks. 😆

Thanks, DH. 🙂
What presies did you get? 😀

Yes, it had! We had alternating sun, snow, sun, snow several times a day. It was a great fun! (Not for poor Arwen :p)
😆 It wasn't that cold temperature wise. But the wind added a lot to the cold. And it was quite a wet kind of snow or soft hail (graupel) mixed with sleet, interlaced with occasional sun. So the snow didn't stay on the ground longer than a few hours. Apparently it was a little deeper higher on the hill and some people did manage to ski or snowboard.
It looks rather warm though. Did the snow stay long enough for you to ski around a bit?
