Collages March and April 2011

Finally I got around to creating the collages for the months of March and April.

The March collage, on the right, is very low key and quite subdued, reflecting the stress I was under from the two horrific quake disasters that hit the country I live and love and the country I was born and still love. There was also the pressure to finish roof painting (Project-R) before the summer is over. I was so relieved when I put the last coat on the corrugated iron.

In contrast, the April collage, below, is the celebration of my discovery of a new world, the Kingdom of Fungi, and my becoming free from the major DIY tasks and resuming my hill walks, at least until the real wet weather hit. …

As clear as black and white

Only about a week ago I tried my hand on digital black and white photography for the first time.

My aversion to digital BW started when I got my first digital camera in 2002. I was very happy to get the new toy and trying all available presets. But when I tried the BW, I was very disappointed it looked more grey, washed out, than what I remembered the black and white on film had looked like. It did not do anything for me.

But since I joind the S&T six months ago, I've seen some marverous BW and other monochrome pictures. Now with summer is over for us and dark gloomy winter months approaching, I was ready to try something new.

Mom!

In spirit of Mother's Day weekend, I would like to share the special page I've just found called Mom's Gallery, created by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF previously known as World Wildlife Fund).

In nature, perhaps no other bond is stronger than that between a mother and her young. A mother feeds, nurtures, teaches, protects, and sacrifices to ensure the survival of her children.

New Zealand Sign Language Week

New Zealand Sign Language Week has just started. According to the information at Deaf Aotearoa web site:

New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is unique to New Zealand and is one of our official languages.

NZSL is the natural language of the Deaf community in New Zealand; so it reflects the country’s culture by including signs for Maori terminology and concepts which can not be found in other sign languages or countries.

As one of the country’s official languages, more than 24,000 New Zealanders use NZSL daily. It is also the 12th most frequently used language out of approximately 190 languages currently used in New Zealand (Census 2006)
